This is How You Build a Beauty Legacy… Celebrating 75 Years of the Bronner Bros. Hair Show!

Updated: Sep 9, 2022

Miki Wright presents at the Bronner Bros. Hair Battle

As I write this, the first ‘in person’ Bronner Bros. Hair Show in more than 2 years is in full effect, lighting up Miami, FL as only Hair Stylists can! I wasn’t able to be there, but so many of my friends, fellow Educators and Social Media followers are there soaking up the Miami sun (and rain I heard, lol), as well as the sights and sounds of the festive trade floor they are known for and first class education, showcasing the latest trends in multi-cultural haircare, beauty and fashion and business.

As I watch the posts role (or scroll) by, I can’t help but reflect on the many exciting turns of my career that happened as a result of the Bronner Bros. Organization. I am so grateful that I got to personally thank their President and CEO, Bernard Bronner, when he joined me to share about their phenomenal success as a family owned business and how they navigated through the pandemic and continue to thrive. Take a look for yourself.

These days, there is a lot of talk about leaving a legacy for your children and creating generational wealth, but few, if any people we know personally have done that. We are super blessed, because in this Beauty SuperStars Talk interview we got to hear first hand what has worked for their family and led them to celebrate 75 years in business, with 2 generations and counting. With the 3rd generation, he warns us to look out for a lot of ‘Black Girl Magic’, as many of that next generation are female!

So just how do you build a legacy business? Here’s how Bronner Bros. did it:

  1. Decide that you want to build a business or Brand that will last more than 1 generation. Everything starts with desire and passion.

  2. Get mentoring on how to do it. Many of us, especially as Black entrepreneurs, have not had that experience, so find someone who has. Mr. N.H. Bronner did.

  3. Train the next generation (preferably while they’re young), expose them to different parts of the business. Bernard started Upscale Magazine from watching his parents put together the BB Hair Show Souvenir Book late at night. Upscale has been one of the leading publications on news stands for more than 30 years.

  4. Step out of the way to watch your next generation lead, and provide guidance as needed. This can be so difficult for many people. We want to be in charge, it’s our baby, etc., but in reality we may be the biggest obstacle to the next generation’s success. Mr. N.H. Bronner made a bold move, stepped down and watched his sons lead for 20 years before his passing. He left knowing they were well prepared.

  5. This is just my P.S., it doesn’t hurt to have a lot of kids, lol. Bernard mentioned that it helps because no one person has to do it all. He also mentioned that his father never made or insisted any of them work in the business. He let them choose. And he also encouraged each of his 6 sons to become Entrepreneurs. He also trained and encouraged his employees to do the same.
