Running a business isn't always easy. Did you start this year with some lofty goals? You can almost see them, feel them, yet you can't seem to reach them? Sometimes that can feel like you're stuck - that 5 letter word that just won't let you move forward. I want to share a few things that may help you to get 'un-stuck'.
So what's in your way and what can you do?
Recognize that there may be some fear in reaching that next level. What we know is familiar. What we want lives somewhere out in the unknown! Even though we think it will make our lives better, it’s still scary! There’s a great book you may want to check out, it’s called Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway* by Susan Jeffers. And while you're at it, give yourself a little grace. You're human!
Give up perfectionism! It comes in handy to be a perfectionist when we are cutting or styling hair or applying make-up in our professions. But often we procrastinate – yes I did use the ‘P’ word - because we fear we won’t do it well. Can you still hear your mom saying, “If you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all”? That saying doesn’t even really work for housekeeping, let alone the rest of the things we need to take care of on a daily or weekly basis. www.Flylady.net says ‘Housework done imperfectly still blesses your home’! She gives us permission to just vacuum in the middle of the floor if that’s all we have time for. The house still looks better. Not perfect, but better. We can borrow some of that wisdom from her. Just do something.
You may need to get help with some things you’re procrastinating with. I met with a Business Owner who shared one of her biggest blocks was Procrastination. When we looked at one of the things she was procrastinating with, it was keeping up with her numbers/bookkeeping. When I asked her if she liked doing it, she said not really, but once she got started it really didn’t take that long. Since having her numbers is so important to running her business, I suggested a few things.
1) getting some help, maybe a college student or inexpensive Bookkeeper to come in once a week?
2) maybe she could meet with another business owner and they each work on their numbers together, for accountability or
3) maybe just bookend the task with someone by phone, call them when you start and then when you finish, again for accountability. Acknowledging that it’s not her strength and having some ‘easy’ options for gaining support, made a daunting task seem very manageable.
What I can tell you is that there will NEVER be a perfect moment, where the seas part and the angels sing and there’s nothing else going on in your life. If you wait for that moment, you will never reach your goals! Take some action, now. If you like, share below your next action step. We'll be cheering you on!
